Hinch Peated Single Malt Irish Whiskey is a rarity: a peated single malt from Northern Ireland. Made by Hinch Distillery in Ballynahinch, County Down, it uses barley dried over peat smoke, then matures in oak and is bottled at 43% ABV (86 proof). The peat is restrained compared with Islay Scotch, sitting alongside citrus, vanilla and a hint of spice rather than dominating. The palate is smooth with a gentle smoky sweetness, and the finish carries a soft wisp of smoke. It is a good whiskey for Scotch drinkers curious about Irish malt, and for Irish whiskey fans looking for a change from the usual unpeated style. This 750ml bottle makes a distinctive Penicillin or smoky highball and sips well neat.
